Westhaven’s First River Cruise: Going With the Flow

Westhaven residents and their invited guests enjoyed a 7-night cruise aboard the AmaCerto

After more than a year of planning, Westhaven’s first community river cruise set sail in July. Twenty-two neighbors and friends joined Franklin-based Journey Luxe Travel for what was originally scheduled as a seven-night cruise along the Rhine River from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam.

Historically low water levels on the Rhine meant our ship could no longer operate the original route. Just days before departure, AmaWaterways rerouted our group to a special Best of Holland and Belgium cruise, sailing roundtrip from Amsterdam.

It wasn’t the trip anyone expected. But our Westhaven travelers met the change with patience, flexibility and a genuine sense of adventure. As Westhaven resident David Fligel put it, “When on a cruise, just go with the flow… it’ll all be great!”

Rather than dwell on what we were missing, we embraced the chance to explore destinations many in the group had never seen before.

A New Route, New Discoveries

Throughout the week, we enjoyed wonderful meals, our choice of locally guided tours, time to explore independently, and the relaxed pace that makes river cruising such a special way to see Europe.

In Kinderdijk, we visited the iconic UNESCO World Heritage windmills that have helped manage Holland’s water for centuries. In Belgium, some wandered the picturesque canals of Bruges, a city that feels lifted from a storybook, while others explored Ghent with its own kind of beauty with striking medieval architecture, grand churches and a lively waterfront. In Brussels, some travelers took part in one of Belgium’s sweetest traditions, learning to make their own Belgian chocolates, while others explored the iconic city at the heart of the European Union.

“Between the amazing food, beautiful scenery and impeccable service, the cruise was unforgettable — made even better by making new friends who live right in our neighborhood,” said Westhaven resident Heather Creel.

Many in the group began their vacation with an optional land package in Switzerland. Lake Lucerne offered a stunning introduction to Europe, with mountain scenery, a historic waterfront and a peaceful atmosphere that set the tone for everything to come. The group stayed at the five-star Waldhotel Lake Lucerne, a luxury wellness retreat overlooking the lake.

Although the cruise itinerary change was outside anyone’s control, AmaWaterways worked closely with us throughout the transition, and travelers are receiving a future cruise credit as a courtesy for the significant change in plans.

More Than a Destination

Of course, the sights were only part of what made the trip so memorable. Traveling with neighbors, forming new friendships, and spending time together both on and off the ship was as meaningful as hoped. One particularly unforgettable evening of karaoke on the ship lasted well into the night.

“My favorite part by far was sharing the incredible trip with neighbors. Westhaven Karaoke rocked!” said resident Maria Wood. “Thanks, Kristina, for raising money for the Westhaven Foundation and making this trip possible.”

Most meaningfully, the cruise also supported a cause close to our community. From the revenue generated by the neighborhood’s first river cruise, Journey Luxe Travel is donating $4,786 to the Westhaven Foundation.

It was an honor to host this group and watch neighbors become travel companions and friends. I’m grateful to everyone who joined us, trusted us through the unexpected changes, and helped make our first group river cruise such a meaningful success.

Our route may have changed, but the purpose of the journey never did: experiencing the world together while giving back to the community we call home.

“This river cruise showed that travel can make a difference,” said Westhaven Foundation President Jason Kaplan. “And we’re excited to offer more chances for residents to enjoy an incredible trip while giving back.”
